Jon Jones Tactfully Overpowers Gustafsson UFC 232 | Regains UFC Light Heavyweight Title
17 months, one disastrous drug test and a storm of damaging headlines later, Jon Jones is still the UFC light heavyweight king.
Jones (23-1, 1 NC) was able to bounce off all of the talk concerning his drug history to finish Alexander Gustafsson via 3rd round TKO in a rematch of their thrilling 2013 title classic. Jones took home the vacant 205-pound title that was surrendered Thursday by heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier.
The thirty-one year-old Jones, who was profoundly criticized for the UFC’s decision to move Saturday’s UFC 232 card on just 6 days’ notice from Las Vegas to another venue. The Forum in Inglewood was where this stage was set.
Jones seized the light heavy weight belt for the 4th time (he also briefly held the provisional title in 2016) after being stripped of the 205-pound title a record 3 times due to corrective and drug suspensions.
In a bout that was much more strategic, Jones worked unwearyingly from the outside to control distance while chipping away at Gustafsson with lower limb kicks and body punches to open up takedown efforts.
